Douglas Hurd

Former Foreign Secretary

The Rt Hon the Lord Hurd of Westwell CH CBE is British Conservative politician and novelist, who served in the governments of Margaret Thatcher and John Major between 1979 and 1995. Lord Hurd was the Member of Parliament for Witney from 1983 until 1997. During that time, Lord Hurd was appointed Minister of State at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office from 1979 until 1983 and Minister of State at the Home Office from 1983 until 1984. He was then Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in 1983 and returned to the Home Office, as Secretary of State from 1985 until 1989. He was appointed Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in 1989 until 1995. In 1997, he was raised to the peerage as Baron Hurd of Westwell, of Westwell in the County of Oxfordshire.
