Ambassador Giancarlo Aragona is a former Italian diplomat. He currently serves as Scientific Advisor to the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI) which he presided from 2012 to 2016.
After working in the Foreign Ministry in Rome, he was appointed First Political Advisor to the Embassy in London in 1984, responsible for Euro-Atlantic issues. In 1987 he was transferred to the Permanent Mission of Italy to NATO. Upon his return to Rome, he worked as Diplomatic Advisor to the Minister of Defense between 1992 and 1994. In 1995 he was appointed Head of Cabinet of Minister of Foreign Affairs. He was afterwards appointed vice-chief of cabinet at the Italian Foreign Affairs Ministry, a post he held until 1996 when he became Secretary-General of the OSCE. At the conclusion of the three year term, he was appointed Ambassador of Italy in Moscow. He was recalled to the Foreign Affairs Ministry in 2011 to serve as General Director of Political Affairs. In February 2004 he was posted to London as Italian ambassador and then retired from diplomatic service in December 2009.
In 2009 he was called by the NATO Secretary General to join the Group of Experts, chaired by former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, with the task of preparing a report on the reform of the Alliance. From 13 October 2010 he has been president of the Nuclear Management Company (Sogin), also chairing the Mediterranean Institute of Hematology.
