Javier Solana

Former NATO Secretary General, Former EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy and former Foreign Minister of Spain

Professor Javier Solana is a Spanish physicist and politician, member of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE). After serving in the Spanish government under Felipe González in various posts among which as Minister of Foreign Affairs between 1992 and 1995, he was appointed Secretary General of NATO. Following this, he was appointed the European Union’s High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, Secretary General of the Council of the European Union and Secretary-General of the Western European Union and held these posts from October 1999 until December 2009.

In December 2009, Javier Solana joined ESADE Business School as President of its new Centre for Global Economy and Geopolitics.

He is also a member of the Advisory Board for the European Leadership Network (ELN).
