Margherita Boniver

Former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs

Margherita Boniver is an Italian politician and former Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs.

She founded the Italian section of Amnesty International which she led from 1973 to 1980. Elected in 1987, she was a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies for the Italian Socialist Party (PSI) until 1992, and then a member of the Senate from 1992 to 1994. From 1987 until 1989 she also served as Member of the European Parliament. Between 1991 and 1993 she served twice as minister: Italians Abroad and Tourism. From 2001 until 2006 she served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for two terms in the Cabinet of President Silvio Berlusconi.

In 2006 she was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies, where she is currently Vice President of Forza Italia’s group, representing the social-democratic wing of the party. She also served as President of the Italian Parliament’s Schengen Committee and Foreign Minister’s Special Envoy for Humanitarian Emergencies and Vulnerable Situations.
