Hugh Chalmers

Researcher for the Verification Research, Training and Information Centre (VERTIC) and an Associate Fellow of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI)

Hugh is a Researcher for VERTIC’s Verification and Monitoring Programme. His work focuses on issues of nuclear arms control, non-proliferation, disarmament, and IAEA Safeguards. He also researches and comments upon Iran’s nuclear programme and the UK’s nuclear weapons for media outlets such as the BBC, Guardian, Times and CCTV. Hugh is also an Associate Fellow of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI).

He holds an MA in Science and Security from King’s College, London, and previously graduated with a Bsc(Hons) in Astrophysics from the University of Edinburgh. As a Research Analyst at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), he coordinated the UK Project on Nuclear Issues and authored several reports on nuclear weapons and prolifearation, including “Relocation, Relocation, Relocation: Could the UK’s Nuclear Forces be Moved after Scottish Independence” (2014), “A Disturbance in the Force: Debating Continuous At-Sea Deterrence” (2014), and “Iran: Red Lines and Grey Areas”.
