Kristian Åtland

Senior Research Fellow, Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI)

Dr. Kristian Åtland is a Senior Research Fellow with the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI), located at Kjeller, Norway. He holds a PhD in political science from the University of Tromsø and a MA degree in Russian studies from the University of Oslo.

In the period from 1994 to 2002, he was employed in the Norwegian Foreign Service and worked as a desk officer in the Foreign Ministry’s Russia and CIS division, as Second Secretary at the Norwegian Embassy in Kiev, and as Consul at the Norwegian Consulate General in San Francisco.

Since 2002, he has worked as a defense researcher and published a number of articles, research reports, and book chapters on various Russia-related topics, with a particular focus on security issues and crisis management in the Barents Sea region and the circumpolar Arctic. His articles have appeared, inter alia, in Cooperation and Conflict, Armed Forces & Society, European Security, Security Dialogue, and Contemporary Security Policy.

In 2007–2008, Åtland was a Fulbright visiting scholar at the Institute of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ISEEES), University of California, Berkeley.
