ELN Policy Fellow Julia Berghofer moderates a discussion with Bayerischer Rundfunk journalist Eva Lell & Chair of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber

ELN Policy Fellow Julia Berghofer was a guest at the “Salon Luitpold: Quo Vadis, Europa?” in the Café Luitpold in Munich, where she moderated, together with Bayerischer Rundfunk journalist Eva Lell, a discussion with Manfred Weber, Chair of the EPP Group in the European Parliament. The event took place on 18 September 2020, only two days after Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered her state of the Union address in which she laid out an ambitious vision of the Union but completely omitted security and defence issues. Therefore, a large portion of the conversation with Mr Weber centred around his views on the EU’s goals in the sphere of security policy, alongside rising challenges such as China.

The recent P5 affirmation that “a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought” as well as the incorporation of strategic risk reduction into the nuclear doctrines and dialogues working group are impactful and are welcome first measures. The P5 must now build on this momentum to discuss a substantive programme of work which must will lead to the implementation of concrete risk reduction measures within the eleventh review cycle.
