John Stanley

Former Chairman of the Committees on Arms Export Controls

Rt. Hon. Sir John Stanley was the British Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Tonbridge and Malling.

Elected in 1974, he was the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt Hon Mrs Margaret Thatcher MP, then leader of the Opposition from 1976 to 1979. In 1979 he was promoted to Minister of State with responsibility for housing at the Department of the Environment. In 1983, he was appointed Minister of State for the Armed Forces in the Ministry of Defence. From 1987 until 1988, he was Minister of State for Northern Ireland.

Sir John served as the Chairman of the Committees on Arms Export Controls which consist of four Select Committees: Business, Innovation and Skills; Defence; Foreign Affairs; and International Development Committees from 2011-2015.

He was also a member of the Top Level Group of UK Parliamentarians for Multilateral Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation.
