Reflections from 1MSP: There is something new happening in nuclear non-proliferation

At the end of June, the first Meeting of States Parties to the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) took place in Vienna. At this inaugural meeting, states parties to the TPNW gathered to commit to concrete actions to implement obligations under the Treaty. ELN network member Tarja Cronberg participated in the meeting and shares her reflections with us.

Impact case study: The P5 affirm that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought

In the recent years, the ELN’s work on the P5 Process has focused on the call for the P5 states to set up a working group to advance strategic risk reduction. In the aftermath of the P5 statement reaffirming the Reagan-Gorbachev formula, the ELN will continue to keep open the space for engagement with the P5 Process to help provide the ideas and encouragement for further progress.

The ELN convened over 70 experts, researchers, and practitioners from around the world to look at the nexus between disruptive technologies, nuclear decision-making and arms control. This workshop report explores the challenges and opportunities new technologies pose to existing arms control and proposes six policy recommendations.

Does NATO have an arms-control brain?

Rather than forever circling the wagons, NATO needs to develop its own ideas so that it can respond credibly to its adversaries’ proposals and restore its leadership role. As the alliance’s leaders gather this week, the ELN’s director Adam Thomson argues that they must recognize that reviving the arms-control agenda is the key to members’ collective defence.
