Gernot Erler is a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and has been a member of the Bundestag for Freiburg since 1987.
He served as Coordinator of German-Russian Intersocietal Cooperation (2002-2006) and Minister of State in the Federal Foreign Office (2005-2009). Prior to this, he was Chairman of the Disarmament and Arms Control Committee from 1994 until 1998. Moreover, he served as Deputy Chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag, responsible for foreign, defence, development policy and human rights. Erler is also Chair of the German-Bulgarian Forum.
Since 2014, he has been the German government’s Coordinator for Intersocietal Cooperation with Russia, Central Asia, and the Eastern Partnership Countries. Moreover, he was appointed as Special Representative of the Federal Government of Germany for the OSCE Chairmanship in 2016.
Mr Erler is a member of the Advisory Board for the European Leadership Network (ELN).
