Euro-Atlantic Security

This programme looks at the security environment in the Euro-Atlantic area, especially at the challenges connected with the deterioration of the relationship between Russia and the West. It analyses the consequences of the crisis for the EU, NATO and the OSCE and offers recommendations on future policy. It takes a wide angle view of security issues, considering, among others, nuclear and conventional arms control, transparency and confidence-building measures, terrorism and other hybrid challenges, economy and sanctions, or cyber-space.

Global Security

The Global Security programme focuses on challenges to Europe connected with the existence nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, as well as delivery vehicles. It promotes the reduction of the role of nuclear weapons and strengthening of non-proliferation regimes and arms control treaties, including New START, the INF, and the NPT. It promotes entry into force of the CTBT and efforts to conclude a Fissile Material Cut-Off Treaty (FMCT). It also addresses the threat of nuclear terrorism, gaps in nuclear materials security arrangements, and also the impact of missile defence. A sub-programme focuses on the ways in which European countries can respond effectively to the challenges of the security environment in the Middle East.

European Defence

The European Defence Programme focuses on the future of European security, in the frameworks of the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) and the NATO European pillar. It addresses the opportunities for enhancing EU-NATO relations, encouraging greater commitment to transatlantic burdensharing and improving European cohesion on security matters. The programme will also seek to examine the changing role of the UK in European security after Brexit, in parallel with analysing the role of members of the wider Euro-Atlantic space.
