ELN-RIAC Seminar: Towards a More Stable NATO-Russia Relationship

On July 16-17, 2018, the European Leadership Network (ELN) together with the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) held a seminar in Moscow within the joint project “Towards a More Stable NATO-Russia Relationship.”

Prominent high-level experts from NATO countries and Russia — retired diplomats and military, former officials, representatives of think tanks and the academic community — discussed main factors contributing to the confrontation between NATO and Russia, and the instability of their deterrence relationship as well as opportunities to mitigate shared Russia-NATO risks. The first workshop focused on Russian and NATO military doctrines, deterrence signalling in peacetime and crisis, military deployments and the introduction of new military capabilities as well as military exercises.

The aim of the initiative is to identify specific, realistic and politically feasible steps that Russia, NATO and NATO members can take to move towards a more stable deterrence relationship. The second workshop is to be held in November 2018.
